How to Clean Your Room in 7 Steps
There’s nothing like a clean room. in this post I will be taking you through how to clean your room in just 7 simple steps.
But if your room currently looks like a tornado hit it, cleaning can feel completely overwhelming. I get it. I’ve had days where my floor was basically an obstacle course of clothes, cups, and random stuff I didn’t even remember bringing in. So today, I’m breaking it down and showing you how to clean your room in 7 easy, doable steps.
And hey, I’ve added a checklist at the end so you can save it and use it every time your space needs a reset. Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Gather Your Cleaning Essentials
Before you touch anything, gather everything you’re going to need. Seriously. Running back and forth for supplies is how most of us end up lying on the bed, staring at the ceiling, and giving up halfway through.
Here’s what you’ll want to have nearby:
- Multi-purpose bleach like Domex
- All-purpose cleaner (Cif is a good one)
- Microfiber cloth
- Microfiber duster
- Mop
- Broom or vacuum cleaner
- Trash bags and boxes
- Laundry basket
Once you’ve got all your tools ready, Time to tackle the mess.

Step 2: Sort Through the Clothes
If your clothes are all over the place, you’re not alone.
Start by sorting them into two simple piles: clean and dirty. Dirty clothes go straight into your laundry basket. Clean ones? Fold them, hang them, or put them away neatly. No more chair piles. I know that chair. I’ve had that chair. It becomes a second closet, and not in a good way.

Step 3: Remove Everything That Doesn’t Belong
Time to do a sweep of everything that doesn’t actually live in your room.
That includes trash, dirty dishes, receipts from six months ago, random shopping bags, and maybe that mug you swore you’d return to the kitchen last week. Toss all trash in a garbage bag. Take any dishes to the sink. And put the rest where it belongs.
This step instantly makes your room feel lighter. Less visual noise. More peace of mind.
Step 4: Clear and Wipe Down All Surfaces
Now that your room isn’t buried in clothes and clutter, it’s time to clean your surfaces.
Take everything off your dresser, desk, nightstands, and windowsills. Spray them down with your all-purpose cleaner and wipe them using a microfiber cloth. Trust me, your stuff will feel way nicer going back onto a fresh, clean surface.
Don’t skip the little areas like the tops of frames, lamp bases, and corners. Dust builds up there like it’s paying rent.

Step 5: Organize and Put Everything Back
This is the fun part. Or at least the satisfying part.
Now that everything’s clean, start putting your stuff back but only if it makes sense to keep it. Be thoughtful. Fold your clean clothes and put them in the drawer or on hangers. Arrange your skincare or makeup like you’re setting up your own little beauty counter. Straighten your books or notebooks. Give everything a home.
Step 6: Make Your Bed
There’s something magical about a freshly made bed. Even if the rest of your room is still in progress, a made bed makes everything look more put together.
Switch out your bedding if it’s due for a wash. Fluff the pillows. Pull the sheets tight. And then just take a second to admire how much cleaner your space already feels. A clean bed is a total mood booster.

Step 7: Sweep and Mop the Floors
Last but not least, tackle the floors.
Sweep or vacuum up all the dust, crumbs, and whatever else has been hiding under your bed. Then grab your mop and give the floors a good once-over. If you have time and energy, move some furniture around and get into those forgotten corners.
Clean floors make the entire room feel brand new. Your feet will be happy. Your mind will be clearer. You might even feel like you’ve got your life together. Kind of.

Knowing how to clean your room is more than just a checklist. It’s a form of self-care. It’s about creating a space that feels like you. A place that reflects the version of yourself you’re becoming, not the one who’s just trying to keep up.
You’re not messy, lazy, or behind. You’re just a human. Cleaning is one of the ways we take care of ourselves. One step at a time.
And next time things get out of hand, just come back to these seven steps. They’ll walk you through it, every single time.
